Antwerp International Airport is first airport in Belgium to obtain RNP approach certificate.
The RNP approach, or ‘Required Navigation Performance’ allows aircraft to land based on satellite navigation. Nowadays most aircraft target radio beacons and the so called ILS system ‘Instrument Landing System’.
Currently the runway at Antwerp Airport is equipped with ILS in one direction only. The RNP approach will also allow precision approaches from above the city.
The new system will first and foremost further enhance safety. Aircraft will now also be able to land when visibility is lower on runways without ILS. Another advantage is the fact that flight paths will be measured more accurately which is more environmentally friendly.
This will be effective as from December 2015 and will later be rolled out in other airports in Belgium.
